Intermarine Ltd wins British Waterways contract, see press release below, 15/01/09

Intermarine secures £5 million British Waterways deal

Southampton-based pontoon specialist Intermarine is celebrating a major contract win from British Waterways.

The highly successful company currently turns over some £4 million per annum and has built its reputation on creating innovative and bespoke solutions for coastal and inland waterway moorings.

The business, part of the Mackley Group, has worked with British Waterways for more than seven years and has just secured a significant framework agreement with a potential value of £4 to £5 million over the next five years. Under the agreement Intermarine will have an exclusive arrangement for mooring and pontoon work with the national organisation.

This new contract will see the company’s role expanded from design, supply and installation of pontoons to include work on non-standard moorings in marina and dock areas. Intermarine and the Mackley Group’s expertise in design, construction, civil engineering, piling and other technical specialties will all be utilised.

Intermarine has previously worked with British Waterways on the supply and installation of pontoons and berths. Recent projects included the installation of berthing for 44 boats at Clarence Dock in Leeds as part of the £2.5 million mixed-use development – a job which included the creation of a unique engineering solution to ensure that the pontoons are secure in an area which is subject to unusually high water levels.

Intermarine managing director Scott Gaherty believes that the key to the company’s success in the highly competitive tender process was based on a combination of factors. Those included its existing excellent track record – delivering more than 100 projects in 2008 alone - and the ability to deliver a complete bespoke supply and installation solution through its parent organisation, Mackley Construction.

" We are naturally delighted with the contract win, " said Scott. " We were able to demonstrate competitive pricing coupled with the specialist engineering solutions to meet the needs of a client like British Waterways. "

" It has been a tremendous to work with them. They have been innovative in their thinking, which reflects our own approach and from an engineering perspective the projects we have been involved in have often been unusual and challenging. Together we’ve broken the mould of tried and test solutions to deliver some unique results, which is always an exciting process. "

" British Waterway's environmental commitment already includes the use of Forestry Stewardship Council timber. Intermarine is actively exploring alternative environmentally sustainable decking options something which we know is also of interest to them. "

Intermarine’s expertise has been built on supplying and building marina pontoon systems from site survey and initial design specifications to commissioning. As well as its work in the UK for clients such as the Environment Agency, Cardiff Harbour Authority and Glasgow City Council it also has a successful European export business and a growing worldwide reputation.

It was recently awarded a £500,000 contract for the two-phase re-build of 600 berths in Lisbon from Ahlers Lindley LDA and is also set, via its partnership network, to complete installations in Guatemala and Switzerland during 2009.

" The confirmation of the British Waterways framework agreement marks a great start for the New Year and will ensure a solid base of work on home territory which is particularly pleasing in the current economic climate, " concluded Scott.

Half of the UK population lives within five miles of a canal or river and British Waterways is responsible for public access to some 2,200 miles of waterway – the banks of which are part of day to day life for more than 11 million people each year.

Nigel Habben, Group Procurement Manager for British Waterways commented: “We’ve enjoyed a mutually beneficial partnership with Intermarine over the past few years and are pleased that they’ve won the contract again.

" They were up against very strong competition in a keen market place and their ability to demonstrate their acclaimed capabilities, competitive pricing and proven solutions secured their position. We are looking forward to working with them over the next five years. "

" Part of our ethos as a group has been the development of partnership approaches to our work and to building our business through long term relationships and framework agreements with major clients, " added Rod Peryer, Mackley Construction managing director.

" Intermarine’s success in securing this latest contract delivers a huge boost to the business and also demonstrates the value the group can add to clients of an engineering led supply and installation operation. "
